Jamaica is an island in the Caribbean Sea. The island is grouped into three historic counties: Cornwall, Middlesex, and Surrey which are divided into fourteen parishes.
Since the 17th century, when Jamaica was under British rule, the number of parishes has varied from as low as seven to as many as twenty-two. It wasn't until the Act of 1867 that the present day number of fourteen parishes were established. Most are named in honor of monarchs or statesmen and their spouses, or patron saints of the British, or Jamaican governors.
